Where to Sell an Old Phone in India: Every Option Compared
First, a quick disclosure.Cashkr is our own buyback service, and we're one of the options listed below. That means we do have a stake in your choice. We've clearly pointed out where other options pay more than we do.
Here's the short answer: If getting the most money is your priority and you have time, sell your phone privately. If you care more about speed and certainty, go with a buyback service. We're in the second group, but that option isn't right for everyone.
There Are Three Ways to Sell, Not Five Websites
Most guides mention five different websites as if they're all the same, but that's not true. There are actually three main ways to sell, and the type matters more than the website name.

Classifieds, such as OLX. You list the phone, buyers contact you, you negotiate and you meet. Nobody takes a cut, so you keep the whole price.
Rabin Khadka covers smartphones, laptops and India’s growing market for used devices. She spends most of her time tracking launch prices, price drops and resale values, and has a particular interest in why two phones that cost the same on launch day can be worth very different amounts two years later.
Exchange programs, such as Amazon and Flipkart. You trade the phone against a new one and the value comes off the purchase. You never see cash.
Buyback services, such as Cashkr and Cashify. You get a quote online, someone collects the phone, and the money reaches your account.
Figure out which selling method fits your needs best. Once you know that, the rest is easy.
Classifieds: Most Money, Most Work
You will usually get the highest price here. No company is taking a margin, so a buyer paying Rs. 30,000 means you receive Rs. 30,000.
The trade-off is your time and some risk. You'll need to write the listing, reply to messages, handle lowball offers, and meet up with strangers. Payment fraud is a real issue on Indian classifieds, and there's no one to help if something goes wrong. Sometimes, your phone might stay unsold for weeks.
It suits you if the phone is recent and valuable, you are not in a hurry, and you are comfortable handling buyers and payment carefully.
This option isn't great if your phone is old, damaged, or not a popular model. For cheaper phones, the extra money you might get usually isn't worth all the effort.
If you decide to sell this way, check out our guide on selling safely first. Payment scams can be tricky and even careful people can fall for them.
Exchange programs: Easiest, but Tied to a Purchase
Amazon and Flipkart both let you trade an old phone against a new one. The discount comes off at checkout and a courier collects the old phone when the new one arrives. If you were buying anyway, nothing is simpler.
During big sales, exchange offers can sometimes give you more than buyback services. Retailers often add extra bonuses to clear out stock, especially for popular models, and those bonuses can be significant. If you're buying during a festival sale, check the exchange value before selling anywhere else. In this case, we'd actually recommend you take the other option.
There are some real limits here. You can't get cash, and the final value is decided when the courier picks up your phone. Sometimes, the courier might lower the value after you've already agreed to the purchase. Also, older or damaged phones are often not accepted.
It suits you if you are buying a new phone from that retailer anyway, especially during a sale.
Buyback Services: Fast and Certain, at a Price
This is our area, so consider this our own perspective, not an independent review.
You answer questions about the model and condition, you get a quote, someone comes to your address, checks the phone against what you described, and pays you.
The honest trade-off here is price. Buyback services pay less than private sales because they cover inspection, handling, and the risk of future problems. If getting every last rupee matters most to you, this probably isn't the best choice.
Buyback services really shine for phones nobody else wants, cracked screens, dead batteries, water damage, phones that won’t turn on, models five years old. Classifieds buyers usually avoid these, and exchange programs often refuse them. But a buyback service will still give you a quote, since the parts are still valuable.
Buyback services also offer certainty. You know the price before anyone comes to your place, and if your phone matches your description, that price won't change.
This option is best if you want to get rid of your phone quickly, if it's damaged or old, or if you just don't want to deal with buyers.
Five Questions to Ask, Whichever Route You Pick
Can the quote change after inspection? Most complaints come from this issue. Make sure to ask about it before you book, not when the person arrives.
What happens to your data? Any service should be able to explain this clearly. The most important thing is to sign out and reset your phone yourself before handing it over; nothing else matters more.
Are you comparing phones in the same condition? Comparing a perfect phone to a scratched one isn't fair. Make sure you describe your phone the same way to every service.
Does the service pick up from your area? Check if your pincode is covered before making any plans.
How and when will you get paid? Make sure you know the answer before handing over your phone.
Before You Hand It Over, Whoever You Sell To
Follow these three steps, in order.
Back up, and open the backup to check it worked.
Sign out of your Google account or Apple Account.
Factory reset.
Signing out must come first. If you reset the phone while still signed in, it will lock to your account because of Factory Reset Protection or Activation Lock. After that, nobody else can set it up, and the phone's value drops a lot.
If you're selling privately, give the buyer your IMEI number upfront so they can use the free government check. It doesn't cost you anything and helps avoid most of the bargaining.
So Which One?
If your phone is recent, in good condition, and you have time, use classifieds. You'll get the highest price.
If you're buying a new phone during a sale, check the exchange offer first. The bonus might be better than any other option.
If your phone is old, damaged, or you just want it gone quickly, try a buyback service. We're one of them, but there are others too. Always get more than one quote.
The most important thing is to actually make a choice. A phone sitting in a drawer loses value every month, and the battery gets older even if you don't use it.
FAQs
1. Where can I sell my old phone online in India?
Three routes. Classifieds such as OLX, where you sell directly to a buyer. Exchange programs on Amazon and Flipkart, where the value comes off a new purchase. Buyback services such as Cashkr and Cashify, which quote online and collect from your address.
2. Which one pays the most?
Selling privately on classifieds, almost always, because no company takes a margin. It also takes the longest and carries the most risk.
3. Are exchange offers ever better than selling?
Yes, during big sale events. Retailers add exchange bonuses on top of the base value to move stock, and on popular models those bonuses can beat a buyback quote. Check before you sell elsewhere.
4. Why do buyback services pay less?
Because they take on the inspection, the handling and the risk that a fault appears later. You are paying for speed and certainty. Whether that is worth it depends on how much your time is worth and how much the phone is.
5. Can I sell a phone that does not switch on?
Usually yes, to a buyback service. The parts still have value even when the phone does not. Classifieds buyers and exchange programs generally will not take it.
6. Will the quote change when they inspect the phone?
It can if the phone doesn't match your description. That is why describing it honestly is in your own interest. Ask any service how they handle this before you book.
7. What should I do before handing the phone over?
Back up, confirm the backup opened, sign out of your Google or Apple account, then factory reset. Signing out before the reset prevents the phone from locking itself to your account.
