Apple Trade-In in India vs Selling Your iPhone for Cash: Compared

First, a quick note: Cashkr is our company. This page compares Apple's trade-in program with selling your iPhone for cash, and we are one of the companies that buy iPhones for cash. We have not said which option pays more, because that depends on your phone and only a quote can tell you.

Instead, this page explains how each option works, including details about Apple's program that are often misunderstood. This way, you can get both numbers and decide for yourself.

Everything we say about Apple's program below comes from Apple's own India trade-in page.

The Real Difference, in One Line

Apple gives you instant credit against a new Apple product. Cash buyers give you money you can spend anywhere.

That’s the main difference. Everything else depends on whether you plan to buy an Apple product next.

Weekly tech insights in your inbox. No spam, ever.

Many comparisons, including our earlier version of this page, get this part wrong. Here is what Apple’s India page actually says.

Apple gives instant credit, not a gift card. In their words, they "give you instant credit for your exchange, lowering your order total." This amount is taken off the price of your purchase. The US program works differently, which causes confusion about gift cards. We made this mistake on our page before, too.

It accepts some non-Apple phones. Apple India's page says you can exchange devices "including Samsung and Google smartphones for instant credit". So the common claim that Apple Trade In is Apple-only is not true in India. If you are switching from a Samsung or a Pixel to an iPhone, Apple's program is open to you.

If your phone is an Android, Apple asks you to back up your data and install its Verify app, and the device needs internet access where you are.

Apple offers courier pickup. For an online iPhone exchange, you can have a courier collect your device or drop it off at an Apple Store. So, it’s not true that you must visit a store.

Online exchange covers iPhone only. Mac, iPad and Apple Watch trade-ins are in-store only in India.

Apple does not publish a price list. You answer questions about the device, and Apple asks for the serial number to give an accurate figure. So you cannot look up your model's value in a table on either side of this comparison. Both require a quote.

A device with no trade-in value can still be recycled free. That is a genuine service and worth knowing about.

The One Thing About Apple's Process Worth Reading Twice

Apple's page explains what happens if the courier collects your iPhone and its condition is not what you described. In that situation, the courier "will accept cash, credit or debit card payments" for any balance owed.

So, if you describe your phone incorrectly with Apple, you might have to pay money to the courier at your doorstep, not just get a lower offer.

This is the most practical advice here, and it applies to cash sales too. Always describe your phone’s condition honestly. That’s how you make sure the quote matches the final offer.

How Selling for Cash Works

You get a figure before anyone touches the phone, by answering questions about the model and condition.

Someone collects it and inspects it against the description you gave.

You are paid by UPI or bank transfer once you accept the final figure.

No purchase is needed. This is the key difference. You can sell your phone now and buy your next one whenever and wherever you want, from Apple or any other seller, during a sale or not.

Damage is considered in the price, not a reason to reject your phone. Cracked screens, bad batteries, and phones that won’t turn on still have value because their parts can be used for repairs.

The Comparison, Honestly

We are not adding a "who pays more" row to the table, because we would have to guess. Apple does not share its prices, and used phone values change every week. The answer depends on your model and its condition. Any page that claims one side always pays more has not checked properly.

So Which Should You Choose?

Apple Trade In is a good choice if you have already decided to buy an Apple product, you are buying directly from Apple (not a retailer with a better offer), and you value the convenience of doing everything in one step.

Selling for cash is better if you are not buying another Apple product, you are buying from a different place, you want to wait for a sale, or you prefer cash over a discount.

Here’s something people often miss: If you buy your next iPhone from Amazon, Flipkart, or a retail chain during a sale, Apple’s credit won’t help you there. Selling for cash and buying separately can be better, even if you stick with Apple. That’s why it’s smart to get both quotes before deciding.

How to Actually Compare the Two

This process takes about five minutes and is the only honest way to answer which option is better.

  1. Get Apple's figure. Go to Apple's India trade-in page, answer the questions about your iPhone, and have the serial number ready. Settings, General, About.

  2. Get a cash quote. Describe the same condition, honestly, to one or two buyback services.

  3. Make sure you compare fairly. Apple’s offer is a discount on a specific purchase, while the cash offer is actual money. If you were not planning to buy that exact Apple product, the credit is worth less to you than its full amount.

  4. Check other retailers too. If a store offers a bigger launch discount than Apple, that changes the calculation.

Then choose the better offer. Our guide on selling your old phone online covers all the cash options, not just ours.

Before You Hand Over Any iPhone, to Anyone

This matters on both routes, and getting it wrong stops the transaction completely.

  1. Back up to iCloud or a computer, and check the backup worked.

  2. Move your authenticator app to your new phone.

  3. Sign out of your Apple account. Settings, your name, Sign Out. This is what clears Activation Lock.

  4. Remove the SIM and any eSIM profile.

  5. Then erase. Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings.

Here’s why you must sign out before erasing your iPhone: If you erase it while still signed in, it stays locked to your Apple account and no one else can set it up. Apple cannot accept it as a trade-in, and a buyback service cannot resell it. This is the most common reason the process fails, even when the phone is in perfect condition.

Erasing your iPhone is enough. iPhones encrypt their storage, so erasing removes the encryption key and makes everything unreadable. You do not need to delete your photos first or use special wiping software.

If You Sell to Us

Answer the questions about your iPhone, get a price, and book a free doorstep pickup. We check the phone against the condition you described, and once you accept, payment goes by UPI or bank transfer.

We buy iPhones in any condition, including cracked screens, failing batteries and phones that will not switch on. We also buy Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme, Motorola and Google phones, plus laptops, tablets, smartwatches and wearables.

Get Apple's figure as well. If theirs is higher and you were buying from Apple anyway, take it.

Check what your iPhone is worth.

FAQs

1. Does Apple Trade In pay cash in India?

No. Apple gives instant credit that lowers the total of your new Apple purchase, in its own words, "instant credit for your exchange, lowering your order total". You cannot take it as money or spend it outside Apple. A cash buyback pays into your bank account with no purchase required.

2. Does Apple Trade In only accept Apple devices?

No, and this is widely misreported. Apple India's trade-in page says you can exchange devices "including Samsung and Google smartphones for instant credit". If your phone is an Android you will need to back it up and install Apple's Verify app, and the device needs internet access where you are.

3. Can Apple collect my iPhone, or do I have to visit a store?

For an online iPhone exchange, Apple's page describes a courier collecting the device, or you dropping it at an Apple Store. Mac, iPad and Apple Watch trade-ins are in-store only in India.

4. Does Apple or a buyback service pay more for an iPhone?

Neither of us can tell you that honestly, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Apple does not publish its trade-in figures, and used prices move constantly. The answer depends on your exact model and condition. Get both quotes and take the higher one. It takes about five minutes.

5. What happens if my iPhone's condition is worse than I described?

On Apple's courier route, its page says the courier will accept cash, credit or debit card payments for any balance owed, so you could end up paying at your door. On a cash sale the quote is revised and you can decline. Either way, describing the condition accurately is what protects you.

6. Can I sell a cracked or broken iPhone?

Yes, to a cash buyer, at a lower price, because the working parts still have value. Apple accepts some damaged devices too, but severe damage can reduce or remove the trade-in value, in which case the device can still be recycled free.

7. Do I have to buy something to sell my iPhone?

Not for cash. Apple's credit only exists as a discount on an Apple purchase, so it requires one. A cash sale has no purchase requirement, which is why it suits anyone switching brands, buying elsewhere, or waiting for a sale.

8. Can I use Apple's trade-in credit at Amazon or Flipkart?

No. It only reduces the price of a purchase from Apple. If you are buying your next iPhone from a retailer running a bigger launch discount, Apple's credit is no use there, which is exactly when a cash sale plus a separate purchase can work out better.

9. What should I do before trading in or selling my iPhone?

Back up and check the backup, move your authenticator app, sign out of your Apple account to clear Activation Lock, remove the SIM and eSIM, then use Erase All Content and Settings. Signing out before erasing is the critical step, because an iPhone erased while still signed in stays locked to you and neither Apple nor a buyback service can take it.

10. When is the best time to sell an old iPhone?

Before the next model is announced rather than after, because the steepest fall in used prices happens at launch.
