4G to 5G: Can You Actually Convert Your Phone?

If you have searched for this, you have probably already seen the apps. "5G Force LTE". "4G to 5G Switch". Downloads on sites outside the Play Store, videos with a million views, and comments full of people asking whether it worked.

It does not work. Not because those particular apps are badly made, but because what they claim to do is not something software can do at all.

Here is the honest explanation, what the apps actually are, and what your real options are if you want 5G.

We have not included speed comparison figures, because real 5G speeds in India vary enormously by city, tower distance and time of day, and a single number would be misleading.

The Short Answer

No. A 4G phone cannot be converted to 5G.

5G needs a 5G modem, which is a physical chip inside the phone, connected to antennas tuned to specific radio frequencies. If your phone was sold as a 4G phone, that chip is not in it. No app, no APK, no hidden setting, no SIM change and no service centre can add one. The phone will be a 4G phone for its entire life.

What you can actually do is covered further down, and one of those options is cheaper than most people expect.

Why 4G to 5G Is a Hardware Problem, Not a Software One

This is the part that makes the rest obvious once you have it.

A phone connects to a network through a modem and a set of antennas. The modem is a piece of silicon. The antennas are physical strips inside the body of the phone, cut and placed to receive particular frequency bands. 5G uses bands that 4G phones were never built to receive.

Software decides how the radio hardware gets used. It cannot create radio hardware that is not there.

The clearest way to think about it: an app cannot add a second camera to your phone. Nobody would expect it to. A modem is the same kind of thing. It is a component, not a feature that can be switched on.

This is also why this question has a different answer from most upgrade questions. You can add storage, you can add software features, you can sometimes replace a battery. You cannot add a radio.

What Those "4G to 5G Converter" Apps Actually Do

They fall into two groups.

Network mode toggles. Apps with names like "Force LTE" are a real category, and they do something real, just not what the title suggests. They open the preferred network type setting, which decides whether your phone prefers 2G, 3G or 4G. That setting already exists on Android. On a 4G phone, the highest option in that list is 4G, because that is the highest your modem supports. Nothing in the app produces 5G.

Ad and permission harvesters. The rest are built to be downloaded, show advertisements, and in some cases request permissions that have nothing to do with connectivity. They tend to live on sideloading sites rather than the Play Store, which means nobody has reviewed them.

There is no third group. Once you understand that 5G requires a chip your phone does not have, there is no version of such an app that could work, so there is nothing to evaluate app by app.

One practical warning. Installing APK files from outside the Play Store means switching off a protection deliberately, for an app whose entire premise is false. That is not a good trade on a phone that holds your banking apps and your UPI. If you have already installed one, uninstall it and check what permissions it was given.

The One Conversion That Is Real: Your SIM

There is a genuine question hiding inside this search, and it has a much better answer.

People often assume they need a new SIM for 5G. In India, on the major networks, you do not. Airtel stated at launch that no SIM change is required and that existing 4G SIMs are 5G enabled, and Jio's own support pages say the same about Jio True 5G.

So the 4G to 5G step on the network side is already done for most people. There is nothing to buy and nothing to swap.

But this is the part worth being clear about: a 5G ready SIM in a 4G phone still gives you 4G. The SIM was never what was holding you back. The modem is.

Do You Actually Need 5G?

Before spending money, it is worth asking honestly, because for a lot of people the answer is no.

4G handles most of what phones are used for. WhatsApp, calls, UPI payments, maps, social media, YouTube at normal quality, email, banking. None of these are limited by 4G speeds.

5G makes a real difference for large downloads, high bitrate streaming, heavy tethering, and staying usable in crowded places where the 4G network is congested.

Real world speeds vary enormously. 5G coverage and performance in India depend on which city you are in, how far you are from a tower, and what the network load is at that moment. The speeds in advertisements are best case figures, not what most people see day to day.

4G is not being switched off. There is no deadline approaching that forces you to change phones.

• Slow Speeds on Your Current Phone: If you are noticing slow download speeds, buffering while streaming, or lag during gaming, upgrading to a 5G phone could be a great solution.

• Frequent App Crashes: If your current device struggles to keep up with the demands of new apps, a 5G-enabled device with more powerful hardware could make a noticeable difference.

• Your Phone is Outdated: If your phone is a few years old and you are looking to future-proof your device, a 5G phone will give you access to the latest technology and features.

Your Real Options

If you do want 5G, there are three routes.

Buy a new 5G phone. Entry level 5G phones in India now sell at prices that were 4G-only territory a few years ago. This is the most common route, and the cheapest new 5G phones have come down a long way.

Buy a second hand 5G phone. This is the option most people overlook, and it is usually the cheapest way to get onto 5G. A used or refurbished 5G phone that is two or three years old has already taken its steepest depreciation and will still do everything a new budget 5G phone does, often with better hardware for the money. Check the condition, the battery health, and that the seller can show the original bill.

Keep your 4G phone until it genuinely needs replacing. Covered above. Still a valid answer.

Whichever you choose, the 4G phone you are replacing is worth something, and that brings us to the part where we have an interest.

What Your 4G Phone Is Worth Now

4G phones are not worthless. There is steady demand for working 4G handsets in India, and a phone in good condition with a few years of life left in it still carries a real price.

But 4G resale value declines as 5G becomes the default. This is the honest bit that costs us nothing to say and might cost you money to ignore. Every year, more of the buying market expects 5G, and the pool of buyers for a 4G handset gets smaller. A 4G phone sitting unused in a drawer is losing value the whole time it sits there.

What actually decides the number: the model, how old it is, the graded physical and functional condition, battery health, and whether you still have the bill and box. Battery health is the one people neglect and the one that gets checked first.
