MacBook Resale Value in India: What Yours Is Worth and How to Sell It

Right now, two main factors determine the value of a used MacBook in India. These factors have changed from what mattered three years ago.

The first factor is whether your MacBook has an Intel chip or Apple silicon. This is no longer a small detail. It now means the difference between a laptop with years of software support and one that is nearly outdated.

The second factor is that a new Mac now starts at Rs. 69,900. This price sets a limit on how much any used MacBook can sell for.

If you understand these two points, you will know why you get a certain quote for your MacBook. The rest are smaller details.

Just so you know, Cashkr is our own buyback service. We buy MacBooks, so please keep that in mind as you read our advice.

First: Intel or Apple Silicon?

Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. It names the chip.

If it says M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5, you are fine. Your Mac runs the current macOS and will for years.

If it says Intel, read this carefully, because it is the single biggest factor in what your machine is worth.

macOS Tahoe is the last version of macOS that supports Intel Macs. Apple confirmed this at its developer conference in June 2025.

And only two Intel laptops can run it:

  • MacBook Pro 16 inch, 2019

  • MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2020, the version with four Thunderbolt 3 ports

Every other Intel MacBook stops at macOS Sequoia. That includes the 2018 MacBook Pro, the 2019 MacBook Air, the 2020 Intel MacBook Air, and the two port 2020 MacBook Pro 13 inch.

Apple normally keeps sending security patches for a couple of years after a version stops getting new features, so a Mac on Sequoia is not unsafe today. It is on a clock, and the clock has started.

What this does to the price. A buyer of a used Mac is buying years of use. A machine that cannot take the current operating system has a smaller pool of buyers, and that pool keeps shrinking. If yours is on the wrong side of this line, its value is falling faster than normal depreciation would suggest, and waiting is expensive.

Second: the Rs. 69,900 Ceiling

Apple announced the MacBook Neo on 4 March 2026, on sale from 11 March, at Rs. 69,900. It is the cheapest Mac Apple has ever sold in India. The 512GB version is Rs. 79,900, and Apple's education price is Rs. 59,900.

Used MacBook prices are tied to the price of the cheapest new model. Before March, the most affordable way to get a Mac was to buy a used or refurbished MacBook Air, which kept used Air prices higher. Now, anyone looking for a budget Mac can buy a brand new one with a full warranty.

So, if a used MacBook Air is priced close to Rs. 70,000, it is a tough sell. Most people would rather buy a new Mac with a warranty than a three-year-old one with an older battery for the same price.

The pressure is uneven, and this is the useful part. It lands hardest on older base-specification Airs, which were competing on price alone. It lands lightest on higher-memory Airs and on MacBook Pros, which the Neo does not replace in any meaningful way. Our page on what the MacBook Neo means for used MacBook prices goes through the detail.

Check Your Battery Cycle Count Before Anything Else

This is the number an inspection looks at first, and most owners have never seen it.

Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, then System Information, then Power. Read the cycle count and the condition.

Apple rates recent MacBook batteries at 1,000 cycles before capacity is expected to fall to 80 percent. So a Mac at 300 cycles is barely worn and one at 1,200 is at the end of its rated life, whatever its age in years.

Knowing your battery cycle count will not change your initial quote, but it helps prevent surprises later. You can give an exact number instead of guessing when asked about your battery.s the Number

Memory is another factor, and it cannot be upgraded. MacBook memory is soldered to the board, so an 8GB model will always have 8GB. The used market knows this, which is why a 16GB Air holds its value better than an 8GB one.

Storage is similar. It cannot be upgraded, so it is a permanent part of your MacBook's specs. detail.

Condition, which is the part you control. Screen, lid, hinge, keyboard, trackpad and ports. Check the corners and the lid edges in daylight, because that is where the dents are.

The charger. On a Mac a missing charger is a real deduction, not a rounding error, because Apple's are expensive to replace.

Whether it has been repaired, and by whom. A non-genuine part can show in system information and the next owner can see it. A buyer looking at visible wear knows what they are getting. A buyer looking at evidence of an unexplained repair does not, and uncertainty prices worse than visible damage.

What the Calculator Asks

Our laptop calculator asks for the brand, then the exact model, then the configuration, which for a Mac means the processor, the memory and the storage, then the age of the machine, then its condition covering body, screen and anything that does not work.

It does not ask for screen size as a separate field, though screen size is part of what the model tells it.

Do Not Repair It Just to Sell It

This advice goes against what you often hear, but it is important for Macs because repairs are more expensive than for phones.

If your MacBook has a broken key or damaged keyboard, do not repair it just to sell. Keyboard repairs are very expensive, since on many models the keyboard is attached to the top case and battery. The repair usually costs much more than the increase in resale value.

The same goes for a cracked screen. Getting an authorized Mac display replacement is costly, and the increase in value rarely makes up for the repair cost.

A battery at the end of its life is the one repair that can pay, if it is done at an authorised centre and the machine is otherwise sound and recent. Get the authorised quote in writing before assuming, and compare it against the difference between a quote describing the battery honestly and one describing it as healthy.

A swelling battery is a safety issue, not just a pricing concern. If your trackpad is lifting or your MacBook will not sit flat, fix this right away, no matter what you plan to do with the laptop.

Our guide on repairing or selling a damaged device works through the three numbers you need before spending anything.

The Timing Advice That Is Backwards

Some sources say that a new Apple launch increases the value of older models, but the opposite is true. We have made this mistake in the past as well.

Each new Apple launch lowers used MacBook prices, since the newest model becomes the cheapest new option and older models lose appeal. The MacBook Neo is a clear example: when it was released, selling a used Air became much harder.

So, the best rule is to sell your MacBook before a new launch, not after. If you plan to upgrade, the weeks leading up to an Apple announcement are your best chance to get a good price. Our guide on when to sell explains this timing in more detail.

Before Your MacBook Leaves You

Do this in order. On a Mac the order matters more than on a phone, because of Activation Lock.

  1. First, back up your data. Use Time Machine with an external drive, or copy your files to iCloud or another computer. Make sure to open the backup and check that everything is there.

  2. If you use an authenticator app for login codes, move it to your new device.

  3. Sign out of your Apple account. Go to System Settings, click your name, scroll down, and select Sign Out.

  4. Next, erase your Mac. If you have a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip running macOS Monterey or later, go to System Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset, and choose Erase All Content and Settings.

Signing out first is important because it removes Activation Lock. If you erase your Mac while still signed in, it stays locked to your Apple account. No one else can set it up, so it cannot be refurbished or resold. An iCloud-locked MacBook is worth much less than one that is unlocked.

If the Mac has already gone, you can remove it from your account at appleid.apple.com under Devices.

On an older Intel Mac without a T2 chip, Erase All Content and Settings is not available. You restart holding Command and R, use Disk Utility to erase the drive, and reinstall macOS. Our guide on removing personal data from a laptop before selling covers both routes.

Before your MacBook is picked up, find the charger and clean the laptop.

Where to Sell It

Get quotes from more than one place. A cash buyback pays directly into your bank account with no need to buy anything. Apple's trade-in gives you credit toward a new Apple product, which is only useful if you plan to buy from Apple. Selling through classifieds can get you the most money, but you take on more time and payment risk.

Check what your MacBook is worth.

FAQs

1. How much is my MacBook worth in India?

It depends most on two things: whether it has an Intel chip or Apple silicon, and its battery cycle count. An Intel Mac that cannot run the current macOS has a shrinking pool of buyers. Beyond that, memory, storage, condition and whether you have the charger decide the rest. Get a quote for your exact machine rather than trusting a chart.

2. Does an Intel MacBook still sell?

Yes, but at a widening discount. macOS Tahoe is the last macOS to support Intel Macs, and only the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro and the four port 2020 13 inch MacBook Pro can run it. Every other Intel MacBook stops at Sequoia and will get security patches only for a couple more years.

3. How do I check whether my Mac is Intel or Apple silicon?

Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. It names the chip. Anything labelled M1 or later is Apple silicon.

4. How do I check my MacBook's battery health?

Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, open System Information, then Power. Read the cycle count and the condition. Apple rates recent MacBook batteries at 1,000 cycles before capacity is expected to drop to 80 percent.

5. Did the MacBook Neo reduce what my old MacBook is worth?

Yes, particularly if yours is an older base specification MacBook Air. A new Mac at Rs. 69,900 with a full warranty puts a ceiling over used prices, and the pressure lands hardest on the machines that were competing on price alone. Higher memory Airs and MacBook Pros are less affected.

6. Should I repair my MacBook before selling it?

Usually not. Keyboard and display repairs on a Mac are expensive, often more than they add to a quote. On many models the keyboard is bonded to the top case and the battery. An authorised battery replacement on an otherwise sound recent Mac is the one repair that can pay. Deal with a swelling battery regardless, because that is a safety issue.

7. Does a new Apple launch increase the value of my old MacBook?

No, the opposite. Every launch pushes used prices down, because the cheapest new alternative gets newer. Sell before an announcement rather than after it.

8. What happens if I erase my Mac without signing out?

It stays locked to your Apple account through Activation Lock. Nobody else can set it up, so it cannot be resold. Sign out first at System Settings, your name, Sign Out. If the Mac has already gone, remove it at appleid.apple.com under Devices.

9. Can I add memory to a MacBook to increase its value?

No. Mac memory is soldered to the board and cannot be changed after purchase. That is also why a 16GB machine holds its value noticeably better than an 8GB one of the same year.

10. Do I need the original box and charger?

The charger matters on a Mac, because Apple's are expensive to replace, so a missing one is a real deduction. The box helps a little and is not worth replacing if you have lost it.
